Eight B.C. mayors have joined a coordinated campaign to legalize, regulate and tax marijuana to combat gang violence and other drug-related crime.
Three of the mayors are from the Lower Mainland – Vancouver's Gregor Robertson, Burnaby's Derek Corrigan and North Vancouver City's Darrell Mussatto – while the other cities represented are Vernon, Armstrong, Enderby, Lake Country and the District of Metchosin.
"It is time to tax and strictly regulate marijuana under a public health framework," the mayors said in a letter distributed Thursday by the Stop The Violence BC campaign.
"Regulating marijuana would allow the government to rationally address the health concerns of marijuana, raise government tax revenue and eliminate the huge profits from the marijuana industry that flow directly to organized crime."
The letter was addressed to Premier Christy Clark, NDP leader Adrian Dix and BC Conservative leader John Cummins.
It notes pot is more readily available to youth than tobacco, while smoking rates have been cut through public health regulation, not prohibition.
The mayors also express concern that their cities will face higher policing costs due to "inflexible" federal policies like mandatory minimum sentences for drug offences.
A spokesperson for Stop The Violence BC said mayors of other cities may be considering taking a stand on the issue, but was unable to provide specifics.
"I don't think it necessarily reflects a lack of support," Evan Wood said.
Several city councils have also passed supportive motions.
But Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts said she won't be endorsing marijuana reform.
"The drug dealers are targeting our kids and we are a city with the most kids in the province," Watts said. "So for me, it's not a road I want to walk down."
She said the debate over decriminalization is a matter of federal jurisdiction.
Watts also said marijuana reform wouldn't stop the underground market in other drugs.
"I don't think people are willing to go down the road of legalizing every single drug, including synthetic drugs. That would be absurd."
The Stop the Violence BC coalition has previously released endorsements from various academic, legal, law enforcement and health experts.
B.C.'s chief medical health officer Dr. Perry Kendall was one of the latest to endorse a health-based approach to marijuana policy.
In February, four former B.C. attorneys-general also backed pot legalization.
Premier Clark has deferred the issue of marijuana policy reform to the federal government.

The Huffington Post points out that while Obama seems to believe that his actions are not conflicting with prior statements, lawmakers in five states disagree and have written letters calling out the president’s contradiction with his previous statements and their states’ rights to run their own medical marijuana program.
Is President Obama to blame for the recent crackdown on medical marijuana?
In a new cover story for Rolling Stone, President Obama spoke about the recent string of raids on medical marijuana facilities, including the recent raid on Oaksterdam, that seems to negate his previous comments on the subject while running for office in 2008. As you may remember, President Obama was quoted as saying “I’m not going to be using Justice Department resources to try to circumvent state laws [on medical marijuana].”
Obama offered the following comments to clarify his position as he begins his campaign for a second term this year:
“What I specifically said was that we were not going to prioritize prosecutions of persons who are using medical marijuana. I never made a commitment that somehow we were going to give carte blanche to large-scale producers and operators of marijuana — and the reason is, because it’s against federal law.

(CNN) — Seeing that Rihanna shared photos of herself partying at Coachella last weekend, it makes sense that the singer isn’t concerned about reactions.
MTV posted images Thursday of the pop star messing around with some sort of substance while at the music fest, writing along with it, “Yikes. @Rihanna’s marijuana photos from Coachella spark controversy.”
The tweet’s since been deleted, but not before Rihanna could write back, “@MTV Yikes… @rihanna ran out of f***s to give.”
“Well played,” was the music network’s response. (Well, would you look at that? A truce, just in time for 4/20.)
Rihanna’s been shrugging off the responses to her Coachella photo session all week. On Tuesday, she appeared to write in response to fan comments about the photos, “I’m crazy, and I don’t pretend to be anything else.”

The right wing nut bags at Fox Business News go over the options as to why the hydroponic marijuana growing school Oaksterdam University was raided by the DEA recently — and why it was raided by the left leaning,KGB out of a bong hitting… Obama administration.
Turns out that our pot smoking “friend”, President Obama – has busted more medical marijuana collectives in his painful — less than weed seed baring, four year stint. That compared to the well known under performer GW Bush who only popped half the number of pot clubs in his whole eight years as commander-n-chief. Bottom line is that Obama knows he can slam all of the left leaning medical marijuana states and their related medical pot shops without much fear… Who you gonna vote
